Ian Madsen Earns First World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Win

Ian Madsen Earns First World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Win

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. - Sept. 14, 2013 - Ian Madsen cruised to the first World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series victory of his career on Saturday night at Deer Creek Speedway's Clash at the Creek.

The Australia native and brother of Kerry Madsen was chasing Craig Dollansky in the early going at the 3/8-mile banked oval when Dollansky's car had a mechanical issue on lap 6 of the 35-lap main event. Ian Madsen surged into the lead as Dollansky pulled into the infield, then he had to hold off championship leader Daryn Pittman on two restarts in a light rain.

Both times Madsen pulled away from Pittman to finally earn his first series victory, and together with Kerry become only the fifth set of brothers to win World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series races. The Madsens join Bobby and Joey Allen, Dave and Dale Blaney, Kenny and Dean Jacobs, and Sammy and Jeff Swindell as brothers with World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car wins.

Pittman advanced from fifth to second in the Kasey Kahne Racing Great Clips GF1 to increase his lead in the overall championship standings to 70 points with eight A-mains remaining in the season. Paul McMahan was quickest in qualifying for the 16th time this season and finished right behind Pittman in third. Steve Kinser and Joey Saldana rounded out the top five.

Madsen, in his Stepping Stone Genetics KPC, is the 20th different driver to earn a World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series victory this season and joins Shane Golobic as the only two drivers to earn the first series wins of their careers in 2013. Ian Madsen, the younger of the two Madsen brothers from St. Marys, New South Wales, Australia, qualified seventh before winning his heat race, dash and the feature.

"It's always been a dream of mine to win one of these races and to come out tonight and do it is just unbelievable," Ian Madsen said. "This car has been a pleasure to drive. I've been out here a number of years trying to get a win and it is awesome to get it done. I just tried to get the best restarts I could and go as hard I could. I can't really put it into words right now, it's just really special.

McMahan tracked down Pittman late in the race, but couldn't get around the points leader.

"We were pretty good, but I messed up on a double-file restart and fell back to sixth and had to battle our way back to third," said McMahan, the CJB Motorsports driver from Nashville, Tenn. "When we got into lapped traffic, that was our only shot at getting past Daryn, but I didn't think I would get all the way clear of him. It's been a rough few weeks for us out on the West Coast swing."

The championship battle continues to swing towards Pittman with Donny Schatz finishing sixth on Saturday night. With his runner-up finish and three qualifying points, Pittman now commands a 70-point lead with eight events to go.

The entire race, including caution periods, ran in just 14 minutes as track and series officials pushed the program forward with inclement weather in the area.

On Friday, Sept. 20, the series returns Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, for the 4 Crown Nationals with hot laps are scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. Eastern. The series then continues east on Saturday, Sept. 21, for the Commonwealth Clash at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa.
